Milk-Free Calcium Rich Foods

Small Vegan Food Pyramid

One of the most misunderstood aspects of veganism for people looking in from the outside is calcium. If you're a vegan, you've been asked many times how you get calcium. If you're a vegan parent, that question is coupled with a judgmental look.

It's important to remember where people are coming from; after all, we were all taught that calcium is important for bone health and that milk does a body good. How can a body be good without milk?

Well, it turns out that a) countries with the highest intakes of calcium also posted the lowest levels of bone density and the highest bone loss over time (The China Study) and b) the calcium in milk is not easily absorbable by the body.

There are a plethora of calcium rich foods that are entirely plant-based and don't depend on the milk of another animal. Check them out now to ease your worries.

Superheroine Food of the Month: Strawberries

Superheroine for Newsletter

Not only are they absolutely delicious, but fresh strawberries hold a wealth of nutritional benefits that help everyone; your kids, the adults, and the baby growing inside you. You might be surprised to know that you can even use them outside your body to freshen your complexion.

And that's how they became this month's superheroine food.

Learn all about the health benefits of strawberries and how many you need daily to reap the benefits.

Question: "What are some good snacks for preschoolers?"

Question

Question:

I have 2 children: 2 and 4 years old. I would love tips on handling preschool snacks. The parents take turns providing snacks and sometimes it is dairy based or processed (like Goldfish). Should I always send them with a substitute snack and warn her teachers? They sometimes reward kids with a hershey kiss or sucker (MAYBE once a month). So that's all off-limits in a vegan diet right? What about birthday parties--bring our own cake? Halloween, Christmas, Easter treats?

I apologize for the MANY questions but I am that mysterious mix you described (anxious, nervous, thrilled, excited).

Thanks for any advice you have!

Recipe of the Month: Vegan Strawberry Shortcake Recipe

Strawberry Shortcake Recipe with Cashew Cream Sauce

Now that you know all the amazing health benefits of strawberries, what better way to honor them by featuring them in this month's recipe? I absolutely adore fresh, local, organic strawberries and I rarely want to do anything with them other than eat them whole.

But, this recipe doesn't require you to cook or alter the berries too much from their original form. And plus, it's such an iconic dessert!

I veganized my old childhood favorite recipe for strawberry shortcake, and it came out light, fluffy, and with just the perfect balance of salty and sweet. I think you're going to love it.

Get the complete vegan strawberry shortcake recipe here.
