Emily Deschanel Pregnant As A Vegan

Emily Deschanel, the actress most known for her starring role on Bones, gave birth to her first child with husband David Hornsby in the fall of 2011.

Emily has been vegan since 1992, evidently after she read Diet For A New America in high school. Since that time, she's become an awesome advocate for animals and for a more compassionate lifestyle. She received The Humane Society's Humane Advocate Award for her work in promoting animal welfare.

Emily and her husband David were married in the fall of 2010 and celebrated with a vegan menu and wedding cake.

Emily Deschanel Pregnant Diet in the News

Emily Deschanel's pregnancy diet made the news about midway through her pregnancy when she opened up to Ladies Home Journal about how she receives criticism for her diet choices.

She said, “Saying no to meat makes me feel stronger inside; I feel aligned with my morals and ethics. I still have to defend myself because people don’t understand it. As a pregnant woman especially, people will say to me, ‘You must eat meat and dairy.’ You really have to tap into your self-esteem whenever people try to convince you you’re making the wrong choice.”

It's frustrating to hear that she dealt with criticism during her vegan pregnancy. I often wonder why people find it socially acceptable to question someone who eats a healthy diet with no meat, but don't find it acceptable to question someone who's eating fast food. Why don't people approach pregnant women who are eating McDonald's and remind them of the importance of prenatal nutrition?

The long-time vegan Emily Deschanel said, "I still have to defend myself because people don't understand." It's only a matter of time before people understand, and the best we can do is keep spreading the word and showcasing the healthy numbers associated with a balanced vegan diet. Those naysayers should see some of our cholesterol levels!

Emily had a nutritionist who helped to ensure she ate plenty of healthy foods and snacks to maintain her energy levels. Word is that they added in many smoothies made with nuts, berries, and coconut water, and she stayed away from processed snacks.

I personally loved to hear that Emily Deschanel maintained her vegan diet during pregnancy. We know that it is incredible healthy for mother and child, if done in a whole foods way and not based on processed foods.
